3°12′NNorth-east Kuala Lumpur

Three degrees north,
the sun passes almost overhead.

In Kuala Lumpur the sun leans north in June and south in December, and at noon it is almost overhead. So what a facing decides is mainly when in the day the sun comes in, above all the hot afternoon sun from the west.

The sun’s path over north-east Kuala Lumpur (seen from above): in June the sun rises east-north-east, passes high in the northern sky and sets west-north-west; in December it rises east-south-east, passes high in the southern sky and sets west-south-west; at the March and September equinoxes it rises almost due east and sets almost due west. The qibla, the direction of Mecca, is about 292.5° (a geometric estimate). Altitude 30° 60° N E S W 21 June21 March / September21 December about 292.5°
Calculated with NOAA’s solar-position formulas for about 3.2° N, 101.7° E. The centre is the zenith and the rim the horizon; shading by buildings and terrain is not included.

The short answer

Kuala Lumpur lies about 3° north. By the solar-position formulas, the June sun rises east-north-east (about 66.5°) and sets west-north-west (about 293.5°); the December sun rises east-south-east (about 113.4°) and sets west-south-west (about 246.6°); at noon it is close to overhead in both. So an east-facing wall gets the morning sun and a west-facing wall the sun from afternoon to dusk, the afternoon heat people talk about; north- and south-facing walls each take more direct sun in a different season. Which facing suits you depends on how your household spends its day.

The sun’s track

How does the sun move through the year?

The round diagram at the top of the page looks straight down from the sky: its centre is the zenith and its rim the horizon. The three tracks are 21 June, 21 March and 21 September, and 21 December. At 3° north, the sun runs high in the northern sky in June and high in the southern sky in December; around the March and September equinoxes it rises almost due east and sets almost due west.

This is geometry: the sun you actually get also depends on the floor, the buildings around, trees and the weather.

Calculated with the NOAA formulas

Eight facings, twelve months of sun

The 21st of each month, from 06:00 to 19:30 in quarter-hour cells: a filled cell means direct sun reaches a wall with that facing. “Facing east” means the wall’s outward normal points east (90°), and so on.

The afternoon sun

The heat from the west is direct afternoon sun

Walls facing west, south-west and north-west take direct sun from the afternoon until sunset. Afternoons in Kuala Lumpur are usually warmer, so rooms on that side run hotter: this is the west sun people talk about. An east-facing wall gets its sun in the morning; by the afternoon, no direct sun reaches it.

No facing is better in every case: a household that leaves early and comes home late, someone who works from home, someone who feels the heat or who loves the evening light will each choose differently. Where the windows are and how big they are, shading and insulation matter a great deal too.

Towards Mecca

The qibla

Calculated from north-east Kuala Lumpur, the bearing of Mecca is about 292.5° (west-north-west), marked with a dashed line on the round diagram above. It is an approximate great-circle calculation; check it on site with a compass or with the guidance of the religious authorities.
