What the dictionary says

Reading the name

rampai

The Malay dictionary Kamus Dewan gives campuran berbagai-bagai, “a mixture of all kinds”. Bunga rampai is a mix of fragrant flowers and leaves.

seri

The same dictionary gives cahaya semarak, “radiance”; the word also means glory, beauty and splendour, and serves as an honorific.

The schools write “Seri Rampai”; the LRT station and DBKL write “Sri Rampai”. “Sri” has no entry of its own in the dictionary of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. These are literal meanings only, not the origin of the place name.

LRT and highways

Getting around: one line running, one proposed

Started, stopped, started again

Work on Sri Rampai station began in 1996 and was put on hold in 1997: development around it had been delayed, it was said at the time, and few people lived nearby. Work resumed in September 2008, and the station opened on 24 December 2010. Its neighbour, Wangsa Maju, had been running since 1999.

At its opening the station listed escalators, lifts, tactile paving, a surau and a covered walkway to the Desa Putra Condominium.

Heavy rain on 15 October 2024 damaged the track between Wangsa Maju and Sri Rampai; service was restored that afternoon.
