The KL Education Department’s list gives only a school code and the school’s Malay name. This page works through that list for the north-east, school by school, and marks each one’s stream.

The short answer

Most government schools in north-east Kuala Lumpur come under the Keramat District Education Office (PPD Keramat); in Setapak, SJK (C) Chong Hwa, SJK (C) Chiao Nan and SMK Chong Hwa come under the Sentul office (PPD Sentul) instead. On the KL Education Department’s list, the Wangsa Maju, Sri Rampai, Setapak and Danau Kota area has national primary schools, Chinese primary schools, national secondary schools and two vocational colleges, and Setapak is also home to TAR UMT’s main Kuala Lumpur campus. Which school serves which area is decided by the education department.

The Chinese names come from the 2010 survey of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinese primary schools by Jiao Zong, the Chinese school teachers’ association. SJK (C) Wangsa Maju is newer than that report; its Chinese name is the one in common use.

Not the same schoolChong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur, is not in Setapak: the records of Dong Zong, the Chinese school committees’ association, place it on Jalan St. Thomas, in the Jalan Ipoh area. It is a different school from the SMK Chong Hwa on the ministry’s list.

The Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology has its main Kuala Lumpur campus on Jalan Genting Kelang, Setapak. It grew out of Tunku Abdul Rahman College, which began teaching in 1969, and formally became a university in 2022.
